Cake Challenge

One of our family traditions is that the boys choose what kind of cake they want for their birthday and I try to create it. I don't mean just the flavors that go into the cake, though that is obviously part of it. They also decide exactly how they want it to look. In the past, they would just shout out a concept~Train! Race car! Robot!~ and I would decide what that meant.

Now that they are getting older, I do a cake consultation with them ahead of time so they can draw it out. So, this year for Josh's birthday cake, he drew this:














And I made this:
















So obviously, as they get older, the designs get more complicated...which brings us to Jonah's 7th birthday party this weekend. The cake he has planned is basically a screen shot from a game of Super Mario Brothers which means a very basic sheet cake, but a LOT of drawing with frosting. This cake is going to challenge my abilities as a cake designer but you know what I say to that?

Game on.
